The Ontario Power Company, another American power company, also opened a hydro-electric generating plant in 1905. Built above the base of the Horseshoe Falls this plant had 15 generators which produced 203,000 horsepower of electric power. The plant’s service has been interrupted several times due to flooding by ice and water in 1909 and 1938. In 1997 its service was interrupted again for several weeks due to the severe ice conditions. The station was eventually shut down in 1999 in order to accommodate the construction of Casino Niagara on the former transformer building location.
